Use Vision Insurance to Order Contact Lenses Online

Want to order contact lenses with insurance? There are two ways most vision plans handle contacts online:

  1. In-network checkout (your benefit applies during purchase)
  2. Out-of-network reimbursement (you buy first, then file a claim)

Lens.com supports vision insurance through out-of-network reimbursement. That means you can still order contact lenses online, but your insurance benefit usually won't apply at checkout. Instead, you purchase your contacts normally, then submit a claim to your vision plan for reimbursement based on your coverage.

The process is straightforward: place your order, download or request an itemized, insurance-friendly invoice, then send your carrier's out-of-network claim form along with the invoice (and proof of payment, if required). This setup avoids checkout verification issues and gives you more flexibility to buy the brands and prescription parameters you actually wear, while still using benefits from plans like VSP, EyeMed, Davis Vision, Superior Vision, MetLife Vision, Humana Vision, or UnitedHealthcare Vision when your policy includes out-of-network coverage.

How vision insurance works for contacts

Most vision insurance plans separate benefits into buckets, like exam and materials. Contact lenses fall under materials, and your plan may have rules around:

  • In-network vs out-of-network
  • Allowance limits (your plan may cap what it pays)
  • Frequency (how often you can use the contact lens benefit)

If your plan supports in-network online checkout, you may see discounts at purchase time.
If your plan does not, reimbursement can be the cleaner path.

What you'll usually need to file a claim

Most carriers ask for some version of the same items:

  • Out-of-network claim form (from your vision insurance provider)
  • Itemized invoice (shows what you bought and what you paid)
  • Proof of payment (paid receipt, card statement line item, or paid invoice)

If you're unsure what your plan wants, start with the carrier's form. It lists the required documents.

How it works with Lens.com

1
Order your contacts online

Buy the contacts you need, just like any other online purchase.

2
Get your insurance-friendly invoice

After you order, you can download or request an insurance-friendly, itemized invoice that works well for claims.

3
Submit your claim to your vision plan

Use your carrier's claim form and submit it with your invoice and proof of payment. Your plan decides the reimbursement amount based on your benefits.
